On the morning of April 1st, 2009 I had a rather difficult experience with my garage door. Seeing as though it was on April fool’s day, I figured my husband or someone was playing an April fool’s joke on me before I went to work. I get in my Escalade and try opening the door with my opener, and it didn’t work. It made a strange ticking noise and the light on my opener did not come on. I didn’t even bother trying to open it with the one on the wall. I just got out of my car and went to the outside and typed in my code. After I typed my code in it worked!

I was late for work, and I almost got fired and I explained to them what had happened with my garage door, and they let me off on a warning. On my lunch break, I got a hold of my husband and explained to him what had happened, and he told me to look online for reasonable repairs. I called many companies and not many of their technicians could tell me what was going on. Finally I found a company with a reasonable price to come out and take a look at it without hesitation. I immediately scheduled an appointment with them for the following day.

I came home from work that day and my Garage door still didn’t work. My husband and I were trying to find out what was going on, and we just couldn’t figure it out. The following day, the technicians came out and checked everything over. I explained the strange ticking noise and they could not figure what it was. They called their coworkers and everything and no one could figure it out. Everything was working right. The motor was working fine, the lights were working well, and the Opening system was working well.

Then it came to my surprise that the reason why the garage door wasn’t opening with the opener was because I had dropped the opener on the garage floor the night before, when I came home from work, and it resulted in killing the batteries and the opener had something rattling around in it. The technicians and my husband were laughing. I was so worried about getting to work and getting fired that I forgot about the incident of dropping the garage door opener. I didn’t have to pay for any repairs from the technicians, I just had to pay for them to come out, and a new opener of course.

That was a lesson learned for garage door repairs. I learned that I have to check every aspect of something when it’s broken before I jump to conclusions. Who would of that that I just needed new batteries and a new Garage door opener. I was expecting it to cost at least three hundred dollars for a repair, but it only came to about forty dollars including a new pack of batteries.

Here is a list of 20 things to consider prior to hiring a roofing contractor

Reputable roofing contractors will have a long history of installing residential roofs.

You should always be specific about what you want – and demand of the roofer that he or she is equally specific in what is included in the quote.

Look for a Roofer who has been certified by a manufacturer of roofing materials. If they offer a certification program for roofers, it could be a sign of quality.

Ask everyone you know about roofing services and their experiences.

Before getting roofing quotes you will want to know your roofing style.

Consider moisture resistance when selecting roof insulation.

Choosing good vapor barrier product will help limit the diffusion of moisture in the roof system.

The shingles you choose should help protect the internal components of the roof, shielding the UV radiation and strengthening the roof.

Roof replacement quotes will depend on the products and company you choose.

You will need to decide on a whole range of roof designs and all of the components attached to complete the roofing job.

It is best to disregard any rough quotes for a roof which are given over the phone.

Roofs need to be repaired as soon as possible to avoid damage to the house and household items.

Most roofing companies also offer siding repair services which include repair, inspection, replacement and material removal.

Employees of the roofing company should have proper training and even be licensed by the right body within your area to ensure that you not only get quality work but that you also do not end up being swindled by an unscrupulous company.

A good roof should last up to 15 years with proper maintenance and the company you choose should offer this kind of guarantee.

Drive through other neighborhoods looking for current roof repair projects and watch how the crews work.

Before you hire a roofer, call the BBB and see if they have a listing for the roofing company.

Work with a roofing contractor with whom you are able to establish an excellent rapport, so you can be sure that your input and suggestions are not dismissed or ignored.

Does the roofing company have a website where you can learn information about their pricing and services, or see images of the work they have done in the past?

Are you able to find testimonials on their website and online reviews from satisfied customers?

If you would prefer to avoid all the hassle of searching for a roofer on your own, work with one of our pre-screened roofing contractors.

The safety of our family as well as keeping our home and personal belongings safe is important to all of us. Knowing a few basic safety tips and just being alert and prepared can not only save us time and money, it might also save your life. Here are just a few basic safety tips to consider when trying to keep your loved ones safe around the home:

Keep health and beauty items like razors, cosmetics, vitamins and perscriptions out of the reach of little ones. Move medications out of the bathroom and into an out-of-reach cupboard with child safety latches. Make sure they have safety caps which are childproof.

Think about small items like coins and jewelery and that could stick in a toddler’s throat. Store them in places which are unaccessible to toddlers.

Regarding cabinets and drawers, install child safety latches. Think beyond the kitchen and bathroom.

Store chemicals and cleaners in their original containers with labels still intact. Never place them under the kitchen sink. Move them to a place which is very secure and can’t be found by small children.

Keep garden chemicals and tools out of the reach of children.

Put away all grooming devices like electric shavers, curling irons, hair dryers when not in use. Tuck away appliance cords, so curious fingers cant grab them.

Replace worn, frayed or cracked electrical cords, and don’t overload electrical outlets. Never run extension cords under rugs. Consider what the extension cords are attached to and what might happen when pulled.

Plug empty or unused electrical outlets with safety caps.

Keep sharp objects like knives in safety locked drawers and not in knife holders.

Point the handles of pots and pans away from the edge of the stove.

House plants can be poisonous, keep them out of reach of children and small animals. Remember that pots are often heavy and could injure a child if it fell.

Prevent burns and scaldings buy lowering the temperature of your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or less.

If you have guns in the house make sure they are secure and out of sight. Store ammunition in a secure and separate place.

Securing bookcases to the wall will help prevent toddlers from tipping them over.

If you have more tips, ideas and suggestions, please add your comments. Together, we can help prevent dangerous situations from occurring.

Have you read the owners manual that came with your new heating and cooling system lately? Well, you most likely aren’t alone. Unless you enjoy reading instruction manuals, appliance warranty guidelines and feel there is nothing better than curling up with a good owners manual, you probably were unaware that you should have your heating and cooling system cleaned and inspected annually.

Virtually all brands from Lennox and Bryant, to Carrier and Amana, all advise/require the same thing. Clean your heating and cooling system annually.

You should also consider duct cleaning as a common sense approach to normal household maintenance. While there are no recommended standards in place for duct cleaning, most heating and cooling contractors agree that you should have your ducts cleaned periodically. If you are unsure as to how often you should have your ducts cleaned, a good rule of thumb is annually for households with pets and children. Especially if there is a smoker in the house, or someone with respiratory problems. On the other hand, if you live alone, have no pets, don’t smoke and have no allergy related conditions, you might be fine to have your ducts cleaned every five years or more.

Once the air duct cleaner has cleaned the dust, dirt, debrs, pet hair, etc…, he/she will be able to offer recommendations for your particular situation.
